Central Queensland Capras were beaten 36-10 by Wynnum Manly Seagulls in Round 11 of the Hostplus Cup at BMD Kougari Oval, with the home side building control through the middle stages before the Capras finished with two late tries.
The Capras were held scoreless until the 71st minute and trailed 30-0 before Malachi Dumas crossed to get Central Queensland on the board. Radean Robinson added a second late try in the 78th minute, with Trey Brown converting, but the damage had already been done.
Wynnum Manly opened the scoring early through Jordan Swann in the third minute, with Alex Lobb unable to convert. The Capras were then reduced to 12 players when Valentine Richard was sent to the sin bin in the 12th minute.
The Seagulls extended their lead in the 24th minute when Tieran Ross crossed, before Lobb added the conversion to make it 10-0. A penalty goal to Lobb on the stroke of half-time gave Wynnum Manly a 12-0 lead at the break.
Central Queensland needed to start the second half cleanly, but Wynnum Manly struck again in the 50th minute through Lobb to push the margin to 16. The Capras were then placed under more pressure when Riley Reid was sin binned in the 56th minute.
That period proved decisive. Garry Tuilekutu scored in the 60th minute, Cassius Cowley followed in the 65th, and Lobb crossed for his second in the 67th as Wynnum Manly moved to a 30-0 lead.
The Capras found a response late, with Dumas scoring in the 71st minute. Wynnum Manly hit back through Jordan Grant in the 75th minute, with Lobb converting to take the score to 36-4.
Robinson crossed in the 78th minute and Brown converted to close the margin to 36-10, giving the Capras late points after a difficult afternoon.
Wynnum Manly finished with seven tries to Central Queensland’s two. Lobb was the main scorer for the Seagulls with two tries, three conversions and a penalty goal, while the Capras’ points came through Dumas, Robinson and Brown.
The result leaves Central Queensland to regroup after a match where the Seagulls controlled the scoreboard, punished key moments, and kept the Capras scoreless until the final 10 minutes.
