Central Queensland Capras were beaten 40-12 by Sunshine Coast Falcons at Sunshine Coast Stadium in Round 5 of the BMD Premiership, with the home side’s fast start leaving the Capras chasing the contest from the opening stages.
The Falcons took control almost immediately. Rebecca Prestwidge crossed in the 1st minute and Sophie Zipf converted to give Sunshine Coast a 6-0 lead before Central Queensland had been able to settle into the match.
That early pressure quickly turned into a major scoreboard gap. Ace Pollock scored in the 5th minute, with Zipf again converting, before Pollock struck for a second time in the 12th minute. Zipf’s third straight conversion pushed the Falcons to 18-0, giving the home side a decisive early platform.
Sunshine Coast added another try through Laura-May McGovern in the 15th minute. The conversion was missed, but the Falcons had still built a 22-0 lead inside the opening 16 minutes.
Central Queensland found a response before half-time. Madeline Johnson crossed in the 19th minute to get the Capras on the board, though Mariah Denman was unable to convert. The Capras then added a second try through Tylah Phillips in the 31st minute, again with the conversion missed, cutting the margin to 22-8.
That gave Central Queensland some ground to work with at the break, but Sunshine Coast reclaimed control early in the second half.
Mackenzie Cassar crossed in the 42nd minute and Zipf converted to extend the Falcons’ lead to 28-8. Five minutes later, Lila Parr added another try, with Zipf’s conversion pushing the margin to 34-8 and leaving the Capras with a steep chase through the final quarter.
The Capras were given an opportunity when Parr was sent to the sin bin in the 61st minute. Central Queensland made use of the advantage almost immediately, with Gail Winni crossing in the 61st minute to reduce the deficit to 34-12. Denman’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the Capras without a conversion from their three tries.
Sunshine Coast closed out the result late when Pollock scored again in the 68th minute to complete her hat-trick. Zipf converted in the final minute to seal the 40-12 scoreline.
Pollock finished as the major scorer with three tries for the Falcons, while Zipf kicked six conversions. For Central Queensland, Johnson, Phillips and Winni scored the Capras’ tries.
